Packet for The Giver

The packet for The Giver has three sections

Personal Reflection and Response
This needs to one per chapter, one from each.

Observations -
I noticed that each family unit had two children, one male and one female child.

Wondering -
I wondered why the people in the community had not seen a fighter airplane before.

PLEASE NOTE:  The wondering can not be related to the Observations.  So you can't say I wonder why they only have two children.

The next section of the packet is Somebody Wanted But So.  One per chapter.

So for the first chapter
Lily wanted to have the male child that was not doing well become part of their family but Dad reminded her of the rules so Lily realized that the rules were important.

The last section is comparison and contrast.
one each for each chapter.
Chapter 1
Contrast - Our families are different sizes.

Compare - Both worlds have airplanes.

This is an important part of the reading grade.

novels

One class is reading The Giver

The other class is reading  Watership Down

I can not stress enought that your student needs to complete the packet that goes with the novels.

Thanks

AR assignment for the 3rd quarter

The AR assignment for the 3rd quarter is 300 pages and 12 points and is due February 24th.  Book talk book can't count towards this assignment.

That being said we are reading in class Inheart and that can count towards the AR assignment.  This book is 23 points and over 300 pages.  We should be done with it before that time.  Just in case your student should be reading another book.

Contact me if you have questions.

Lit Assignment

Book Talk
This is the same notice the students received from Mr. Reffett.

Here is a list of items you must include in your book talk.  If you have more information that would like to add you may do so.  The book talk will be done February 9th.  If you would like to do it earlier you may do so, but you must talk to me about it first.

  • Title and Author
  • Show the cover
  • Give a brief summary
  • Tell a little about the setting
  • Identify the protagonist and antagonist
  • Discuss any connections you have with the book
  • Share your response to the book
  • Ask for any questions
The book talk book can't count towards the AR assignment.  If the book is below the reading level 5 or is not on the AR reading list it needs to be approved by me or Mr. Reffett.  The book talk does count a major test grade and not doing it will lower your student's grades.   The student's do this in front of the class and do it orally.

Language arts

The next novel we are reading is Inkheart.  Mr. Reffett is doing this novel a little different.  We will discuss everyother day so we can have time to read the chapters.
There are several parts of the packet for the novel.  Even though we are reading during class there will need to be some reading at home and outside of class.  I am trying to get this novel on my blog.
  1. A short summary of each chapter 3-5 sentences.
  2. Character Sketch for each chapter
  3. Elements of a Fantasy - Fill in as needed
  4. Imagery Sheet - quote an example of a sentence you find to be well-written, expressive, or unique there are many in each chapter.  This author uses a lot of unique writing styles.  This needs to be quoted using "".

Lit

Today Monday January 2nd chapters 1-4 are assigned for Wednesday January 4th.
Tuesday reading the chapters.
Wednesday January 4th discuss and check packets.  Next set of Chapters for Friday.
Thursday a reading day.
Friday January 6th discuss and check packets

Comp class we are starting a long term group project.  Groups are 3 students.
The Presentation Project will go over several weeks with different items being due as the project progresses.  We will probably split into groups on Thursday of this week.

I will try to keep the blog updates as things are due.  This project is a major grade.
